2014: Spring update

Now that the daffodils are out, the flood waters receding and the sun is shining, a quick catch-up on what has been going on since the start of this year:

• Huxley 616 server room: to cope with increased demand for network connections in the server room, an additional 24 network connections were installed at the end of February.

• compute facilities: the GPU cluster has been expanded with the addition of two new Tesla K20m GPU cards hosted on a new dedicated server (nvidia2) previously not used.

  The K20 GPUs have 2496 cores and 5 GB of memory each (compared with 512 cores and 6 GB for the M2090 GPUs hosted on nvidia1) and will provide a massive boost to the cluster's processing resources. nvidia2 runs Ubuntu 13.04 with the nVidia CUDA Toolkit version 5.5 & the CULA Tools (http://www.culatools.com) sparse and dense libraries as well as the usual packages as installed on nvidia1.

• Stats compute facilities: fiesta has been repaired and is back in service again and, along with bulldozer, fallas and fira, the installed software has been updated with the latest R version 3.0.2, etc. Since fete and hustler are in user's offices, they have not yet been updated but fete is expected to be brought up to date soon when pending hardware repairs are completed.
