October 8th: start of 2017/2018 academic year update
There is not a great deal to report at the moment. The Maths compute cluster moves and upgrades that were scheduled to take place during August and September were only partially completed owing to a series of problems and delays entirely beyond our control. Currently, two-thirds of the cluster comprising the older 24 nodes has been relocated to a new server room, rebuilt/updated and relaunched as the Next Generation Maths compute cluster, supporting the cluster's standard queues only at present.
The 12 compute nodes and the two test & development nodes in the existing 'old' cluster are still operational as before, providing the bulk of the cluster computing power as well as the higher-spec nodes supporting the larger/specialist job queues but cannot now be moved or upgraded until funds become available to complete an additional user storage project. Even when (if) this does happen, a partial cluster shutdown and stoppage of all queues except the standard queue will be necessary to move equipment and implement the changes. This should have occurred in August and with the current heavy usage of the 'old' cluster, it is now difficult at this stage to see when this can be done.
