a mini-HPC for Stats: a small 11-node HPC modelled on the department's NextGen cluster is being created primarily for Stats section use. During last summer's Stats MSc projects it was noted many students were trying to use the 'qsub' command to submit compute jobs to a non-existent cluster. qsub is found in quite a number of HPC environments - Torque, OpenPBS, PBSPro, Sun Grid Engine, NQS, etc - so it is reasonable to expect some users are familiar with this mode of computing and making dedicated HPC facilities available in Stats will meet this need (as well as reducing the amount of time spent explaining qsub does not work on Stats systems!). To save energy only 4 nodes are powered up at present but more nodes will be brought online as and when demand rises.
