May 2025 update: substantial storage increase for GPU users
Installation of a 10 Gbit/s fibre network to link the three GPU servers nvidia4 to nvidia6 inclusive plus forrest to the new clustor4 network storage server, mirrored by clustor4-mirror, is now complete and nvidia4 is the first of the GPU servers to be connected to it since it already has 10Gbit/s network capability. Providing a physical storage capacity of 180 terabytes at read/write speeds of up to 1 Gbyte/sec, the actual storage capacity available to users on clustor4 will be somewhat greater than this owing to on-the-fly lz4 data compression so we would expect to see a usable capacity of well over 200TB overall.
On nvidia4, this storage can be found in /home/clustor4/username where username is your own username; it is in addition to your existing storage on ths server and you still have the home directory with a link to the on-server storage under /data/username. We encourage users to try the new storage out not just for 'parking' data you already have on the server but also for real-time GPU-based work; eventually you may wish to make the clustor4-based storage your default storage location.
The forrest GPU was upgraded to 10 Gbit/s network today (Thursday, May 8th) while the other GPU servers will need to be shut down for a hardware upgrade before they can make the most of 10 Gbit/s connectivity and this is expected to be done before the end of May, depending on the user demand for these servers.
Also, you will soon be able to access your data on clustor4 from other systems in Maths such as the NextGen cluster, the MSc and Stats compute servers as well as individual systems although if these systems are not physically located in the Maths server room, access speeds will be at the ordinary 1 GBit/s speed on the College network.
